2. Visit Waianapanapa State Park (Black Sand Beach)
Honokalani, the historic black sand beach in Waianapanapa state park, is a must-stop destination in Hāna. The gorgeous, unique cove is nestled between gorgeous lava rocks and vibrant greenery.
With a relaxing beach and walking trails that line the cliffside, your time at the state park will be filled with epic views and activities. Take a dip in the water or hike the King’s trail while you’re there. Make your reservation up to two weeks in advance. Make sure to wear good shoes—it can be rocky and hot!
3. Explore the Lava Tube
Hawai’i is known for its volcanic landscape. Discover this extravagant terrain from underground in a publicly accessible lava tube right here in Hāna. Lava tubes are naturally made pathways due to lava flow crusting over on the surface, creating a cave channel underneath. Once the lava drains it leaves the caverns. The Hawaiian islands contain many underground lava tubes, including the one here in Hāna made by Haleakalā, the East Maui volcano.
This affordable tour is self-guided—flashlights included—and takes approximately 40 minutes to complete. It’s a perfect place to take the whole family! While you’re there, check out the red ti botanical garden maze. Check out their website for additional information.
4. Take Flight Over East Maui
Looking for a luxurious adventure? Take a helicopter flight over the stunning coastline of East Maui. Air Maui, located in Kahului, has various helicopter experiences that include discovering East Maui’s luscious landscape. Fly over the Hāna rainforest, witness an abundance of waterfalls, and even explore views of Haleakalā from great heights all in one flight!
